Wendy Hilliard Foundation Hosts 2024 Summer Gymnastics Camp In Harlem For Youth (Video)

July 11, 2024

The Wendy Hilliard Gymnastics Foundation (WHGF) is thrilled to announce the dates of its annual summer camp, just in time for the 2024 Olympics.

WHGF holds a summer camp at their Harlem location every year for girls and boys ages 7 to 17.

The camp began July 8 and continues through August 2, Monday through Friday, from 10 AM to 4 PM. There are early drop-off and late pick-up options.

From participating in gymnastics for the first time up to experienced WHGF team members, the students will spend the summer improving their skills and preparing for next year’s competitions with a team of highly trained gymnastics instructors. There will also be cultural trips and other fun activities.

Instructors at WHGF summer camp will not only be teaching safe and competitive gymnastics this summer but are also dedicated to the foundation’s mission of empowering the lives of young people from underserved communities by improving physical and emotional health through the sport of gymnastics. In addition, they reflect the demographic of the youth that WHGF serves. Most were competitive gymnasts who spent years developing their craft, and their work at WHGF reflects a level of sensitivity and awareness of the challenges that many students may be dealing with outside of gymnastics. Performance gymnastics is a hallmark of the WHGF and allows students to express themselves through music, dance, and gymnastics.

“Whether athletes and their families decide to take our single-, two-, three-, or four-week options for summer camp, it is sure to be a positive and beneficial experience,” said Wendy Hilliard, Founder and CEO of the Wendy Hilliard Gymnastics Foundation. “The WHGF Summer Gymnastics Program provides a fun, supportive, and safe environment for children to learn and develop their gymnastics, all while making lifelong friendships and building valuable life skills.”

As gymnastics is at the forefront of minds with the impending Summer Olympic Games in Paris, WHGF will continue its focus of growing youth involvement in the sport for generations to come.

The Wendy Hilliard Gymnastics Foundation’s was founded in NYC in 1996 and expanded to Detroit in 2016, in Wendy Hilliard’s hometown. Throughout its 25+ year history, WHGF has served over 25,000 youth.

Wendy Hilliard Gymnastics Foundation offers scholarships to families who may need additional assistance.

Wendy Hilliard Gymnastics Foundation

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Wendy started gymnastics at age 12. She trained through the Detroit Recreation Department with coaches from the former Soviet Union. She was the first Black athlete to represent the U.S. in international competition in rhythmic gymnastics and competed in three World Championships. In 2008, she was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

She was President of the Women’s Sports Foundation and coached 1996 Olympian Aliane Baquerot Wilson. Following her competitive and award-winning experience as a world-class athlete and coach, Wendy recognized the lack of gymnastic opportunities among urban youth, which inspired her to launch the Wendy Hilliard Gymnastics Foundation.

The WHGF is a pioneering, black-led organization, trailblazing the path for international gymnastic champions. As a nonprofit, its unparalleled legacy lies in offering support and opportunities to youth through gymnastics. Often likened to an “HBCU” for gymnastics, it distinguishes itself through the diversity and excellence of its staff.

Moreover, it’s remarkable for introducing thousands of underserved youth to gymnastics, enabling some to achieve incredible heights in a sport typically not located in urban centers.

The Foundation serves urban youth between the ages of 3 to 17. At WHGF, young gymnasts learn about time management, responsibility, teamwork, leadership, and sustainable health habits.
