Harlem Wellness Challenge: Fitness Tips for Spring

April 23, 2015

HarlemRunFunHello Harlem!

Spring is here, well it’s supposed to be here since it’s March 26th! We’ve put together some spring exercise tips to help you get yourself going after being stranded inside with that awful winter weather!

Start off slow, but be consistent and ease yourself back into an exercise program.

  • Set aside 20-30 minutes on 3 days this week that you know you can easily get outside to exercise and DO IT!

  • Walking the stairs at work instead of the elevator. Getting off the train one stop early and walking the rest of the way to your stop.

  • You might want to start carrying your walking shoes with you to work so you can walk home in comfortable shoes.

  • On the days you’re not adding in walking, STRETCH for 15-20 min. If you haven’t been exercising much for the last two months, you’re muscles will feel much better after stretching. If you google Stretching exercises for Walkers and runners or beginners, you’ll find there are plenty of helpful videos online.

  • Set a goal of exercising 5 days a week by the end of April. It will take some extra effort, and sacrificing time in your busy schedule, but it will pay off in May and the entire summer!

  • The days are getting longer! It is light outside from 630am to 7pm so now you have one less excuse! AND the snow and ice are gone, another excuse gone!

  • Bring a friend or two! It’s much easier to go out to exercise if you’re meeting a friend. Peer pressure can be good!

  • Drink more water. Substitute water for other drinks you’ve gotten into the habit of drinking over the winter. Try to avoid smoothies, which are loaded with sugar and calories!

  • If you absolutely cannot exercise without your music, make sure all of your favorite songs are loaded and ready to roll to keep you moving! If you don’t have music, that’s ok, no one’s ever been arrested in NYC for singing to themselves and it might be more fun, try it!

  • Make sure to have fun! Use your exercise time to get away and do something good for you so you can be more refreshed and stronger!
