WE ACT for Environmental Justice, in collaboration with Con Edison and the Public Utility Law Project of New York, is hosting a community workshop to provide energy assistance and advocate for the NY Home Energy Affordable Transition Act (NY HEAT Act).
The event will take place on Thursday, December 12, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Community Center, 34 West 134th Street, NYC in Harlem, NY.
Co-sponsored by New York State Senators Cordell Cleare (D-30), Robert Jackson (D-31), and Jose Serrano (D-29), along with Assemblymembers Manny De Los Santos (D-72) and Yudelka Tapia (D-86), the workshop will assist attendees struggling with energy bills by providing guidance on applications for eligible programs. Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of their utility bill and a recent Benefit Awards Letter (e.g., SNAP, Medicaid, SSI) to complete their applications.
In addition to offering critical energy assistance, the workshop will serve as a launchpad for the statewide advocacy campaign urging Governor Hochul to include the NY HEAT Act in her proposed executive budget. The NY HEAT Act aims to lower energy bills, reduce harmful emissions, and transition New York to cleaner energy systems.
This workshop is part of the New York Heat Days of Action (December 11–16), during which thousands of New Yorkers are participating in events across the state. These actions highlight the dual crises of rising utility costs and fossil fuel reliance, pushing for legislation to deliver equitable and sustainable energy solutions.
The NY HEAT Act: Addressing Energy Affordability and the Climate Crisis
The NY HEAT Act proposes to:
- Lower energy bills so all New Yorkers can afford to heat and cool their homes.
- Eliminate wasteful spending on fossil fuel infrastructure.
- Reduce harmful air pollution caused by methane gas.
- Create clean energy jobs and drive economic development.
