This weekend New York City is dancing! There is dance in Chelsea by a veteran dance maker; while new choreographers test the dance waters in Chinatown, and in Brooklyn two organizations put the dancers of tomorrow center stage. Here are a few of the many arts events taking place around the city and in our community.
Parsons Dance celebrates its 30th anniversary at the Joyce Theatre thru January 26. The program includes the world premiere of David Parsons’ The Introduction set to a new score by renowned cellist and composer Rubin Kodheli. The season also includes Nascimento Novo, with music by South American legend Milton Nascimento, former company member Robert Battle’s The Hunt and Parson’s stroboscopic masterwork Caught. In addition, there are four family friendly matinees (Program B) that include an opportunity for audience members to meet the dancers.
Program A: The Introduction, Brothers, The Hunt, Kind of Blue, Caught, Nascimento Novo; Jan 15 at 7:30pm; Jan 16, 17, 18 at 8pm; Jan 19 at 6pm; Jan 21, 22 at 7:30pm; Jan 23, 24, 25 at 8pm; Jan 26 at 6pm.
Program B: The Introduction, Brothers, Kind of Blue, The Envelope, Caught, Nascimento Novo: Jan 18 at 2pm; Jan 19 at 1pm; Jan 25 at 2pm; Jan 26 at 1pm. Tickets start at $10(call JoyceCharge at 212-242-0800 for $10 tickets) all other tickets can be purchased online at Joyce.org.
Chen Dance Center, 70 Mulberry Street presents newsteps, , its semi-annual emerging choreographer’s series January 16-18 at 7:30pm. The choreographers were selected through live auditions and received a space grant to complete their works-in-progress. The choreographers selected for the performances are: Jin Ju Song-Begin, Hilary Brown & Briana Brown, Calen Kurka, Adam Wile and Luis Gabriel Zaragoza. Jamel Gaines and Creative Outlet Dance Theatre of Brooklyn will present Young Artists’ Concert 2014 on Friday January 17, 7:30pm, Saturday January 18, 7;30pm and Sunday January 19 at 2pm at the Mark Morris Dance Center, 3 Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn. The studio performances will showcase the talents for the school and training company for teens. Works by eight choreographers including Bryan Arias, Jeroboam Bozeman, Jamel Callender, Bahiyah Sayyed Gaines, Jamel Gaines, Corey Jon, Ryan Rankine and Victor Reddick will be performed. Deeply Rooted, the 2014 Restoration Dance Theatre Company’s annual Martin Luther King Day weekend concert will take place Saturday, January 18, 7pm at Kumble Theater at LIU Brooklyn, 1 University Plaza. The concert pays tribute to the tireless work in the struggle for justice, equality and dignity for all, by iconic men such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Nelson Mandela. Choreographers Ronald K. Brown, Germaul Barnes, Lindia Dugué, Nathan Trice and artistic director, Karen Thornton will present works; and a work by Adé Chiké Torbert will also be featured through the Restoration ChoreoQuest Mentoring Initiative. Tickets are $20 general admission $15 for seniors and students with ID. Tickets are available Kumble Theater Box Office, online at kumbletheater.org or by calling 718 488-1624.
