This week art, music and dance take center stage. We have dance downtown, art in Harlem, music in Chelsea, and an opportunity for new dance makers to showcase their work in Chinatown. Here are a few of the many events taking place around the city and in our community.
Art In FLUX Harlem will present Nothing Is Colorproof a gathering at Aloft Harlem Hotel on Thursday, January 9, from 7-10pm. The event will highlight the current exhibition, which features the works of Andre Woolery and Ruben Natal-San Miguel. There will be drink specials at the WXYZ Bar & Lounge where you can talk about art, mingle or shoot some pool. City Parks Foundation presents SummerStage & Santa Monica Pier Twilight Series Preview Showcase on Thursday, January 9, 7pm at the Highline Ballroom, 431 W 16th Street. The concert will feature Pop, Acoustic Folk and Soulful R&B ingénue Yuna, Country, Pop and Blues group Hurray for the Riff Raff, Roots Reggae and contemporary Cuban Son group Rebel Tumbao and DJ Joaquin Joe Claussell. The showcase will provide the audience with a preview of the upcoming SummerStage 2014 season.

Chen Dance Center announces an Open Call space grants for the Newsteps Series, featuring emerging choreographers who are creating new work and works-in-progress. Choreographers should call on Thursday, Jan 23, between 1:00pm -2:00pm to schedule an audition slot. Auditons will be held on Sunday, Feb 9 or Monday, Feb 10. Selected choreographers will be presented in three (3) performances from Thursday through Saturday, May 15-17, 2014. An artist honorarium, publicity, and up to 15 hours of free rehearsal space are provided to selected choreographers. Malcolm Low/Formal Structure will perform In The Thrust Towards The Future…I Want To Leave Something Of Use on Thursday, January 9, at 7:30 pm. at Dixon Place, 161 Chrystie Street. The One-hour work-in-progress showing offers post-modern and neo-Classical impressions of the story of Black migration in America. The work is inspired by Isabel Wilkerson’s book The Warmth of Other Suns, and selected works by James Baldwin. It takes a non-linear look at the Great Migration of African Americans in America from 1916 to 1970 with choreography, video, original music and written text.
