Walter’s World: Dance, Dance, Dance And More!

This weekend dance dominates the arts scene. Two dance titans are presenting their 2012 seasons downtown in the most prestigious performance venues in the city, while a new and innovative dance company will present works uptown in Harlem. There is also a cutting end theatrical production honoring a music original at the legendary Apollo Theatre.

The Martha Graham Dance Company will conclude their 2012 season entitled Inner Landscape this weekend at the Joyce Theater. Inner Landscape presents psychological repertory by Graham and other artists, and celebrates this innovative, provocative and revolutionary approach to dance making. The program focuses on a theme that captured the imagination of America in the 1930s and 40s. Graham was particularly fascinated by the Jungian psychology, and the revelation of the human condition in dramatic movement. The performance schedule is:

PROGRAM A: March 18 at 7:30: Witch Dance, Every Soul is a Circus, Lamentation Variations, Group A, Night Journey

PROGRAM B: March 17 at 8:00, and March 18 at 2:00: Solo from Lyric Suite, Deaths and Entrances, Lamentation Variations, Group B, Chronicle

FAMILY MATINEE: March 17 at 2:00: All City Panorama, Every Soul is a Circus, Other rep TBA


Ticket prices for the Joyce Theater season are: $19, $35 and $59 (Prices subject to change based on demand) and can be purchased through JoyceCharge (212) 242-0800 and www.joyce.org.

The Paul Taylor Dance Company 2012 season is underway at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. This unprecedented season, which runs through Sunday April 1st, a total of 22 works will be performed including three New York premieres. The 81-year-old Taylor remains a prolific force in dance. Over the company’s fifty-eight years history Taylor as create 136 works. The three New York premieres The Uncommitted, Gossamer Gallants, and House of Joy exemplify the multiplicity of his genius. The weekend performance schedule is:

Saturday, 17, 3pm: Roses, Gossamer Gallants*, Promethean Fire

Saturday, 17, 8pm: Cloven Kingdom, Big Bertha, House of Joy*, Beloved Renegade


Sunday, 18, 3pm: Mercuric Tidings, Big Bertha, House of Joy*, Company B

Ticket prices for all performances are $10, $25, $50, $60, $75, $100 and $150 and can be purchased by visiting www.ptdc.org/tickets.

Dance Iquail will kick off its 2012 spring season at the Harlem School of the Arts located at 645 Saint Nicholas Avenue at 141st Street. The company will present four works including a world premiere by former New York City Ballet dancer Alexandre Proia, and the world premieres of Iquail Shaheed’s “Equality for Us 2, and “The Order.” The program will also feature a guest performance by 30 performers from the Ailey Extension Program. Ticket prices range from $15 to $60 can be purchased at Harlem School of the Arts or online at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/225979. Group rates are available by calling Iquail Shaheed at 646-457-7484.

The Apollo Music Café will present Betty’s Story, A Tribute to Betty Davis on 
Saturday, March 17. The doors open at 9pm with a full bar and late night food menu and the performance starts 10PM. Corpus Christi born Nucomme offers a multi-media tribute to Betty Mabry Davis, ex-wife of Miles Davis and one of the original voices in the funkadelic movement of the mid-70’s. Unabashed, sexually charged, and steeped in the funk, soul and R&B traditions, “Betty’s Story” comes unforgettably alive. Curated by Lisa Yancey this show is age-appropriate. Tickets are $20 for the general public and can be purchased
