The legendary Apollo Theater, located at 253 west 125th Street ,will begin a new season of its signature program, Amateur Night. Dubbed the world’s most famous and enduring amateur talent competition, Amateur Night returns to the Apollo stage on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 7:30pm. The debut show will also mark the Apollo debut of two-time Grammy Award winner Jennifer Holliday. Holliday is best known as the original Effie Melody White in the Broadway version of Dreamgirls. In 1982 Holliday received a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, she will grace the Apollo stage as a special guest star performing the show-stopping anthem, And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going.
The evening will also mark the global launch of Amateur Night Digital (amateurnight.org), which will enable Apollo fans worldwide to track the progress and vote for their favorite Apollo Amateur Night contestants
The Apollo’s Amateur Night has long been celebrated as a platform for up and coming talent to showcase their skills. Legendary artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, James Brown and the Jackson 5 have left their indelible mark on the stage. And they join Thousands of hopefuls who have won Amateur Night and the hearts of the Apollo audiences; who lively responses have renowned to making and breaking careers. The new season of Amateur Night shows will occur every Wednesday through October 2012.
