The race for Rep. Charles Rangel’s congressional seat heated up Sunday as a second Harlem preacher threw his hat in the ring.
Pastor Michael Walrond of First Corinthian Baptist Church told parishioners he plans to run. The bombshell comes four weeks after Rev. Calvin Butts (above) of Abyssinian Baptist Church asked black community leaders whether he should jump into the contest.
“I wanted them to know before any official announcement,” Walrond said.
Rangel nearly lost his seat during the 2012 Democratic primary, beating state Sen. Adriano Espaillat (D-Washington Heights) by a mere two percentage points. Espaillat plans to run again.
