On Top Of HEAF’s National College Decision Day

heaf drsft in harlemOn Thursday, May 1st marked the second occasion of HEAF’s Annual National College Decision Day Draft Event where over 100 New York City students announced their college choices.

In partnership with the Bottomline, Breakthrough New York, East Harlem Tutorial Program, Goddard Riverside Options Center, Harlem RBI, iMentor, The Opportunity Network, SEO Scholars, StreeetSquash, YMCA Y Scholars Program and Union Settlement, HEAF lead the organization of this special day to honor the achievements of students who worked diligently over the past four years to gain admittance to college. Citi hosted the event in its, state-of-the-art Park Avenue auditorium.

The ceremony was emceed by NBC New York’s Shiba Russell, the keynote address was given by Ruth Rathblott, President and CEO of HEAF as well as Eileen Auld, Citi Community Development Regional Director, and college announcements were presented by Kym Hampton of the WNBA. The students were given advice from Kym Hampton whose career spanned not only in the WNBA, but Spain, Italy, France and Japan to never be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone.” Students cheered eachother on, many of whom will be going out of state to colleges such as Rollins College in Florida, Virginia State University, Davidson College in North Carolina, University of Redlands in California, Howard University in Washington, D.C. and the University of Pennsylvania. Senior Program Director of Breakthrough, New York, Natalie Cox said “we loved being a part of a group of similar organizations with successful students – our kids and parents remarked after the program how great it felt to be in a room of other inspiring young people.” HEAF gives special thanks to the many individuals, agencies, and institutions that made this celebration a memorable event in the lives of our newest college enrollees.
