Harlem’s unique arts legacy was established during the 1920s Harlem Renaissance and solidified through Harlem Artists in the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s.

The Artist Anubis is an AUDELCO Award Honoree and the author of the poetry collection My People Burn and Other Visions. He represents today’s Harlem iteration, bringing the best of Harlem’s Spoken-word Poetry to theatrical stages.

Broken Mirror: The Poetic Mosaic of a Broken Mind is a one-man show written, directed, and performed by The Artist Anubis. This production takes audiences inside today’s contemporary Black man’s heart, mind, and fears. Fusing theater and improv into his technique, The Artist Anubis grapples with defining himself as a son, lover, and father—all while in the presence of his therapist. At times, his eloquence feels as if the artist is grasping for sanity and, at other times, his humanity. His introspection reveals the shadows and all that is light as he fights his way back to his mental wellness. Honesty is at the forefront of his performances—all done eloquently by The Artist Anubis in spoken word rhyme, which makes Broken Mirror an enjoyable experience as we relate, asking ourselves which of our truths lie in the pieces.

Broken Mirror debuted on Saturday, May 4th, 2024, at The Dwyer Cultural Center, located at 109 West 123rd Street in Harlem, with a repeat performance on June 1st at The Salvation Army Theater at 540 Lenox Avenue, near 138th Street.

Following instant success with rave reviews and resounding reception, Broken Mirror was extended to an Off-Off-Broadway run at The Producer’s Club and an Off-Broadway run at The Triad Theater—the Producer’s Club, is located at 358 W 44th Street, New York, NY. The Triad Theater, located at 158 West 72nd Street, New York, NY, will host performances on Saturday, August 24th and Friday, August 30th, 2024.
