In a groundbreaking announcement, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has revealed that the iconic Apollo Theater will be among its 47th class of honorees.
This is marks the first time an organization has received this prestigious recognition.
The honor comes at a perfect moment, coinciding with the Apollo’s 90th anniversary celebration.
For nine decades, the Apollo Theater has been a cornerstone of Black culture and creativity in America. Located in the heart of Harlem, New York City, this legendary institution has played a pivotal role in launching the careers of countless artists, including Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald.
The Kennedy Center praised the Apollo’s enduring impact, stating, “For nine decades, the legendary Apollo—the soul of American culture—has played a vital role in cultivating emerging artists, launching legends, and serving as a center of innovation for Harlem, the city of New York, and the world”.
Michelle Ebanks, President & CEO of The Apollo, expressed her excitement about this historic recognition: “We are thrilled to be the first organization honored in the history of the Kennedy Center Awards, emphasizing The Apollo’s impact on the past, present, and future of American culture and the performing arts”.
From its famous Amateur Night, which has been a launching pad for numerous stars, to performances by both legendary and contemporary artists, the Apollo has consistently been at the forefront of shaping American popular culture. As it enters its tenth decade, this Kennedy Center Honor serves as a testament to the Apollo’s enduring legacy and its continued relevance in the cultural landscape.
The 47th Annual Kennedy Center Honors celebration, set to take place this December, will not only commemorate the Apollo’s achievements but also shine a spotlight on the institution’s ongoing commitment to amplifying Black voices and fostering artistic innovation.
