Community leaders, local businesses, community-based organizations, and block associations are joining forces to tackle trash in West Harlem and beyond, as part of Team Up to Clean Up on Saturday, June 25, 2022. The goal this year is to engage 400 volunteers.
“Team Up to Clean Up started in 2020 following major budget cuts to the Department of Sanitation trash collection during the pandemic. We came together as neighbors to fill the gap and took cleaning the streets into our own hands. A small effort by many can create a big difference and encourage more to take a leading effort in cleaning up their block or street,” said Signe Mortensen, one of the volunteer Team Up crew organizers.
The Team Up Crew organizes resource hubs throughout the Upper West Side and West Harlem where volunteers can meet up with groups, gather free clean-up supplies, and clean their block, taking ownership for a small part of their community.
This popular annual event raises public awareness about the need for cleaner streets, brings communities together, and fosters civic engagement.
“Team Up to Clean Up filled a gap during the pandemic, keeping our streets clean and promoting community involvement. WHDC is proud to be the fiscal sponsor of this West Harlem beautifying effort. We look forward to its continued expansion and to support TU2CU annually,” said Zead Ramadan, Interim Executive Director of West Harlem Development Corporation.
“We are thrilled to be a partnering sponsor of Team Up to Clean Up this year and will tap our membership base to help expand the effort,” said Charles Callaway, Director of Organizing at WE ACT for Environmental Justice. “For more than three decades, we have been organizing residents to improve the environmental health of West Harlem and other communities throughout Northern Manhattan, and being a part of this massive effort to clean up our streets is a great way to bring everyone together and show our elected officials how we get things done here in Harlem.”
Team Up to Clean Up will take to the streets on Saturday, June 25 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM throughout Harlem, West Harlem, and the Upper West Side.
