It’s 2015, 20 years post To Wong Foo, and I found myself, dragging myself to the Belasco Theatre to see another famous, gorgeous brother in drag.
I couldn’t help but think, “What a drag! This has got to be the worst! What a travesty of justice to dare put lipstick on Taye Diggs!” To me, this was culture shock.
And then the band played. Taye (There will be no spoilers here) entered the stage. Because Taye Diggs is such a delicious looking chocolate morsel, I must admit, he had to perform in drag for me to notice how phenomenally talented actually he is. Taye Diggs owned that stage! He held no punches. And his comedic timing was so impeccable that I couldn’t determine the lines that may have been ad libbed from the lines that were scripted. If I had not already been a fan and familiar with his work from Rent, The Best Man, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, etc., I would’ve assumed Taye Diggs always was a drag queen. Anyone with money should run, buy a ticket, and be prepared to laugh themselves silly.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a revival with the lead role formerly played by Harlemite Neil Patrick Harris, Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall, John Cameron Mitchell, and Darren Criss. Taye Diggs in this role adds the interesting spin, implying the added dynamic of the plight of mix-raced Germans. His co-star Rebecca Naomi Jones was equally brilliant and effective in all her subtle charm.
