The Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated held its 90th Anniversary Awards Luncheon on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Marina Del Rey in Bronx, New York.
The Tau Omega Chapter, based in Harlem, was established in 1925 and is the oldest graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in the New York City Metropolitan area.
Awards were presented to Community Persons of the Year, Ms. Chirlane McCray the First Lady of the City New York and Rev. Michael Walrond, Jr. of First Corinthian Baptist Church. Awards were also presented to Ms. Ingrid Floyd, Executive Director of Iris House for Community Organization of the Year and Ms. Kimberly Singleton for Tau Omega Member of the Year.
New York City Public Advocate Letitia James spoke on the program bringing greetings from her office and praising the organization on their accomplishments in serving the community over the years. Other participants on the program included New York Assemblyman Michael Blake, Acting Supreme Court Judge, The Honorable Tanya Kennedy and former Bronx City Councilwoman Helen Diane Foster.
A special tribute was presented honoring past Chapter Presidents by Tau Omega Members Ms. Sandra Adams-Picchieri and Ms. Karla Elrod. The awards program was followed by the debut performance of the Tau Omega Chorus, a silent auction and live music and dancing.
Proceeds from the event go towards the Tau Omega Charitable Trust Fund, the affiliate non-profit arm of the Tau Omega Chapter that funds scholarships and community service programs and events. Ms. Rosalyn Graves Wilson is the Chairman of the Tau Omega Charitable Trust Fund and the Awards Luncheon Co-Chairs are Dr. Charisse Marshall and Dr. Audrey Williams Myers.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is an international service organization that was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC in 1908. It is the oldest Greek – lettered organization founded by African – American college-educated women. The Tau Omega Chapter implements the organization’s International Targets in the Harlem community. These targets include ASCEND (mentoring), Think HBCU, One Million Backpacks, Medical and Mental Health Awareness, Family Strengthening, Fiscal Responsibility, Voter Registration and more.
