Statement By Mayor de Blasio On The 50th Anniversary Of The Fair Housing Act From Harlem To Hollywood

April 11, 2018

Adopted 50 years ago today, the monumental Fair Housing Rights Act of 1968 sought to protect Americans from housing discrimination, whether renting, buying, or securing financing for a home. Even more than that, the legislation required cities and states to affirmatively work against segregationist forces. Despite that and despite important progress we’ve seen in New York City in just the last four years, we continue to see that opportunity is not shared equally by all New Yorkers – and a federal government working to pick apart the progress we have made as a city and as a nation. We will fight back every step of the way. With or without the federal government, we will advance the vision of democracy laid out by (Dr.) Martin Luther King Jr.
