With an inordinate number of mental health (depression, mental distress, etc.,) residents in Harlem, New York, Harlem World Magazine thinks that the statement by First Lady Chirlane McCray is a great first step forward:
“Today, the Senate passed H.R. 34., the most extensive Congressional investment in mental health in decades. This legislation moves our communities a step closer to getting the mental health care they desperately need and deserve.
“I, along with dozens of mayors from our Cities Thrive coalition, urged lawmakers to pass H.R. 34. This legislation will help all of our families by extending existing federal mental health programs, investing in community-based mental health care, including underserved communities, and providing $1 billion to combat the nation’s growing opioid epidemic. It also recognizes the seriousness of the mental health crisis and establishes new leadership to address it by creating a new Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance, and Chief Medical Officer for Mental Health. We need this improvement and progress in the way we address mental health for the dignity and betterment of our communities.
“I urge President Obama to sign this legislation without delay. The strong, bi-partisan support makes it clear that our communities can no longer wait.”
