Among various breeds of dogs, this hybrid breed is one of the popular ones.
Being a combination of golden retriever and poodle parent, a goldendoodle has all of their parents’ temperaments and easy maintenance. They are cuddly and live up to their nickname as the teddy bear among pups.
Why Goldendoodle
This breed is more than just cute, as they also carry the best features and temperaments from both parents. They are intelligent, with high energy, but minimum maintenance. You won’t have to worry about spending some time alone when you have one of these pups.
- Good for family
It doesn’t matter if your family has experience caring for a dog, as a Goldendoodle will fit the family as they have always been there. The dog’s temperament is mostly cheerful and playful during the day.
Don’t get fooled by their energy, as Goldendoodles also can be high-spirited or extra lazy. At any rate, it has the perfect amount of energy and will to keep your family active. You also can train the dog to follow instructions. Which makes them a great companion for many years to come.
- Highly social dog
You can ask any reputable breeder and you will hear how this breed is highly social, not only among dogs but also with humans. Naturally, they will be suspicious of strangers, but you can train them to recognize your friends and family members. It also will make the regular visit to the dog park even more enjoyable.
- Hypoallergenic
A Goldendoodle tends to have a permed coat like its poodle parent. But even though they have medium to thick fur, the breed is hypoallergenic. Which means, they won’t trigger any allergic reaction from you or your loved ones.
What to Look for in a Breeder
Now that you know more about the dog, you sure want to call up a kennel and get a Goldendoodle puppy. But did you know that finding a good breeder can be as difficult as finding a matching puppy? Here are several things you need to check on the breeders.
- Health Certificates
A reputable breeder will give you the necessary information regarding the pup’s health. In addition to giving you a healthy pup, they also will let you know about their habits. But most importantly, they will equip the new owner with the pup’s health certificates.
This includes their vaccination history, and whether their stomach is sensitive to specific meals. Just to ensure that you’re ready. The breeders also will suggest you microchip or register the pup to protect them.
- Breeding History
One thing you should know is the parents’ history and lineage. A good lineage means the litter will be equally as good. And it also will justify the premium price you’re paying.
This is another instance when you can notice the breeder’s honesty. You should learn how to notice older dogs to see if the parents are of age and not related to avoid any health issues.
- GANA membership
The Goldendoodle Association of North America is a non-profit organization that promotes the ethical breeding of Goldendoodles. One of their basic rules is to not breed a puppy under 1 year old or over 7 years old.
The association also constantly checks on their breeders, to ensure that they are upholding the GANA rules. Even though it’s not mandatory, a breeder that is also part of this association means that they have been ethical and putting the pup’s wellbeing as their priority.
- Price
When you are already set on a puppy, you sure start calculating their prices. Considering the paperwork and other things, you can expect different prices in different states. A good pedigree from a reputable breeder also means a premium price.
Anyhow, you need to realize that it’s not only the initial price that can be high but also the general maintenance. You need to pay for regular vet visits, meals, and snacks, toys and also may need to pay extra when you go to the park.

Caring for the Dog
In general, a Goldendoodle only needs minimum maintenance. It doesn’t mean that you can bring them home and expect them to follow your schedule and habits. You still need to pay attention to what they need first.
1.Spend some time to play
The breed can be highly energetic, just like a golden retriever. Therefore, you need to ensure they have enough time to play. Many suggest the breed to play for at least 10 minutes per day.
However, some Goldendoodles can be quite lazy. When yours is less energetic than others, no need to worry. Their level of laziness is still enough to keep you active.
2. Nutritious meals
It’s a gross misconception to think that your dog can eat the same meal as you. Dogs also have many things that are dangerous or even poisonous for them. Therefore, you need to choose a dog food that is highly nutritious that your pocket allows.
Some dog food brands can be quite expensive, and that’s okay if you can afford them. But if you can’t, then you must look for a less expensive one but with similar quality. You can check with the breeder if they use specific brands for dog food. And also ask for recommendations that will suit your budget more.
3. Regular groom
Generally, this breed doesn’t shed too much coat. This means you don’t have to worry about finding dog hair everywhere inside the house. You still will find some of them here and there, but regular brushing will manage the mane.
But if you want your pup to have a shiny and luxurious-looking coat, you must groom your Goldendoodle regularly. This includes bathing once a month which will make your fur baby healthy and fun to play with.
Keep in mind that owning a pet is a responsibility for a lifetime. You can’t just discard a dog when they’re sick or old or when you have to move somewhere else. Therefore, before you go look to get a puppy from a reputable breeder, you must check if you’re capable of caring for them for at least a decade to come.
