It is said that style never goes out of fashion, so making sure you have a few select pieces that are staples in your wardrobe are essential. Yet it can be challenging to work out what those can be: much as you like your favorite t-shirt now, can you see yourself still wanting to wear it in five years – or even next year?
Whether you want to have a few essentials ready or want to ensure you can add a level of versatility to your clothing, these are some of the items you may want to add to your garment line-up. They will make sure you are always in style.
Dress shirts
You should have at least five of these shirts – one for every working day. You should have a few white ones, plus some pale blue ones. You can also add one or two black shirts as well. These will all go nicely with a gray suit.
If you want any patterned dress shirts, start with stripes: they are more business-like than checks. If you prefer checks, though, then go for gingham because you can wear this for business or casual occasions. Also, get some custom shirts, too, which can be more patterned.
Straight leg dark jeans
You can wear these with shirts, suit jackets, sneakers, black shoes… whatever you want. That is because everything goes with jeans. The length of your jeans can be a bit longer than those for your suit pants.
Coats
Go for quality when it comes to these items because a good one will last for years. You can opt to get a classic-looking coat, a pea coat, or – if you can afford it – a good trench coat.
Suits
A charcoal single-breasted suit is elegant and can easily fit into your wardrobe. It is also a good option for winter occasions – and when you are resting your navy-blue single-breasted suit, which will never let you down as it will be great for work and weddings.
Sweatshirts
A mottled-gray, preppy sweatshirt is an off-duty essential and can be just as great a choice to wear when going to the gym as it is when matched with a double-breasted coat. Your loungewear should make you feel comfortable in your own skin, is versatile yet practical, and can be the perfect piece to wear from day to night.
Khakis or chinos
Every man should have a pair of light-colored pants and are a fantastic choice for casual events. That’s because khakis will let you look polished without feeling as dressed up as you might in suit pants, yet less casual than with jeans – so you might want to wear them to a lunch meeting with colleagues, a summer barbecue, or even a casual outdoor wedding.
Perfect white t-shirt
This can be a great companion piece for plenty of outfits: it can go with cargo shorts and boat shoes for weekends, or dark jeans with a leather jacket and boots for a cool moto vibe. Choose a neckline based on your face shape – so if you have a round face and you want to elongate it, get a V-neck; a crew neck can go with longer faces.
