On the eve of the holiday season, State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal, sent a letter to the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) calling on them to take a common sense approach and adopt the New York City Public School Holiday Calendar.
Synchronizing the holiday breaks for New York City’s private and public school students would provide relief to many families who have children in both private and public schools and currently are forced to navigate two different, and at times conflicting, holiday schedules.

Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal said: “It’s common sense. Families shouldn’t be split up during the holidays. This holiday season – and every holiday season – many families across New York City have to choose between pulling one of their kids out of school for a few days or not spending holidays together as a family. Enough is enough – it doesn’t have to be this way.
“I’m calling on the New York State Association of Independent Schools, the body overseeing many of New York City’s private schools, to synchronize their holiday calendar with the New York City Public School Calendar. Doing so would make a tremendous difference for the many parents who have children in both public and private or special needs schools. By eliminating this unnecessary logistical hurdle independent schools could leave families with one less burden and make the holiday seasons a little more joyful.”
