By Senator Cordell Cleare
Alma Rangel, the beloved wife of Harlem Congressperson Charles Rangel passed away on September 16, 2024.
She was memorialized at Harlem’s St. Aloysius Catholic Church on Saturday, October 20, 2024.
“I am sending my sincerest condolences to our Congressperson Charles Rangel for the loss of his beloved wife Alma Rangel.
As well known as the Congressperson is for his decades-long political representation for Harlem, Alma must be remembered for her unsung work and commitment to our community.
She was a hardworking social worker and a well-respected activist.
So amazing has been her work in our neighborhood, that a low and middle-income senior apartment building was built in her name – the Alma Rangel Gardens, with supportive services for the elders.
For the youth, as President and CEO of the Ralph J. Rangel Foundation, she gave scholarships to students.
Alma was a committed advocate of education and philanthropy. Alma Rangel will be missed. She loved Harlem, and we loved her back.”
