Ending Women History Month. DJ Jon Quick’s 6th Annual Beauty and the Beat Heroines of Excellence Awards took place on March 27th at Suite 36 in midtown Manhattan. As a way to combat negative images of women of color in the media, WBLS’ DJ Jon Quick and team decided to create a fundraiser and celebration of women and the work they are doing in their respective fields and their communities.
This year’s honorees were Anahi Angelone (restaurant entrepreneur-Corner Social in Harlem), Dr. Bobbi Peterson-Demiranda (Celebrity Dentist),Dr. Janna Andrews (Physician/Philanthropist), India Bolds (Broadway Dancer-The Lion King), Glenda Smiley (Writer/Social Entrepreneur-Black Girls Rock), Okema T. Moore (Actor/Media Maven-MOORE than Enuff, LLC), Sabrina Thompson (Storyteller/Activist-KUU Productions), Toni Belafonte ( Actress/Creative Entrepreneur-COPETV™ (Change of Pace Entertainment, Inc.) and Déjà Vu Breakout Sister Award-(Radio Personality/Author-WBLS).
WBLS’ Dr. Bob Lee hosted this special night and things ran smoothly with each of the honorees having her time to shine and receive praise. Founder of Hip Hop Loves Foundation Rene John-Sandy and Yusef Salaam of the Central Park Five both took a moment on stage to say hello and congratulate the honorees.
