Politicians Celebrate Al Sharpton’s Birthday During Harlem rally

October 7, 2017

Rev. Al Sharpton’s weekly rally at his National Action Network headquarters in Harlem had a jovial air as the civil rights activist celebrated his 63rd birthday.

There was cake, candles and plenty of singing of Sharpton’s praises.

“The one thing I’ve learned about birthdays is the older you get, the more precious they are,” said city controller Scott Stringer. “We’re here to celebrate an incredible life dedicated to social justice.”

Reps. Hakeem Jeffries and Adriano Espaillat, state controller Tom DiNapoli, city councilman Ydanis Rodriguez, state senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer all joined Stringer in wishing Sharpton well.

Sharpton made a passing reference to President Trump as he joked with the crowd about his birthday.

“I got a message from y’alls President,” Sharpton said. “And he said, ‘I cannot send you Medicare, I cannot send you DACA, I cannot send you the infrastructure bill, but Al, let them eat cake.’”
