Crains New York reports that for Harlemites who own hoverboards, the Port Authority Trans-Hudson rail line has joined other transit systems in banning hoverboards on its trains and in stations.
PATH made the announcement Friday.
PATH’s director says there have been no incidents on PATH trains but he cited reports around the country of fires and injuries caused by hoverboards.
The lithium-ion batteries used in hoverboards pose a potential fire risk.
Last month a security camera inside a suburban Chicago home recorded a hoverboard catching fire shortly after a child left the house, which was extensively damaged by the blaze.
Mass transit systems including Amtrak, New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority and New Jersey Transit already have banned or regulated use of the motorized scooters.
