The occasion, coinciding with the vibrant celebrations for Hip-Hop’s 50th birthday, witnessed the heartfelt tribute by Papoose and the unveiling of the honorary street sign on a Sunday, August 13th, 2023, in DJ Kay Slay’s hometown of Harlem. The event was graced by a gathering of family and friends, as well as prominent NYC figures like Busta Rhymes, Papoose, and Remy Ma.
Papoose, a longtime friend, and collaborator of DJ Kay Slay, delivered an uplifting speech during the unveiling ceremony, highlighting his commitment to carrying forward the legacy that the legendary DJ had left behind. He commenced his tribute by acknowledging DJ Kay Slay’s remarkable achievements and his profound impact on the music scene. “I am here to ensure that my brother’s legacy lives on, as I am certain he would have done the same for me,” Papoose emphasized.
In a gracious gesture, Papoose extended his gratitude to LL Cool J for granting him the opportunity to take over DJ Kay Slay’s iconic radio show, The Drama Hour. The show’s revival on the Rock The Bells station marked a significant step in maintaining the legacy of DJ Kay Slay.
Papoose proceeded to laud DJ Kay Slay for his instrumental role in launching and revitalizing the careers of numerous rappers through The Drama Hour. He highlighted DJ Kay Slay’s authenticity, noting that he wasn’t swayed by popularity contests or political agendas. “Slay’s dedication to true artistry set him apart; he remained unflinchingly authentic,” Papoose stated with admiration.
In a remarkable revelation, Papoose confirmed a rumor that had been circulating – DJ Kay Slay was actively curating a sequel to his 2021 hit track “Rolling 110 Deep.” Papoose unveiled plans for “Rolling 200 Deep,” a colossal project featuring an astounding 200 MCs. The release is scheduled for the upcoming month, a project that DJ Kay Slay had fervently desired. “Slay’s vision was to witness the realization of ‘200 Deep,’ and now that I hold the position of Head of Hip-Hop at TuneCore, I am dedicated to ensuring that his vision becomes a reality,” Papoose announced with conviction. The release date for “200 Deep” was set for September 15th, 2023.
