Summer Aviation Career Education Academy 2014 For Harlem Youth

March 31, 2014

Hubert Fauntleroy JulianHarlem has a great aviation history, with men like Hubert Fauntleroy Julian (pictured), who was called “The Black Eagle of Harlem” and Eugene Jacques Bullard who was the first black fighter pilot nicknamed the “Black Swallow of Death”.

This is a perfect educational opportunity for middle and high school students in Harlem interested in pursuing aviation and STEM-related careers.

21The Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP) Summer Aviation Career Education (ACE) Academy, is a nationally recognized program co-sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees (NBCFAE) is currently accepting applications for its 2014 summer programs. The purpose of ACE Academy is to offer students first-level exposure to the aviation industry by providing aviation career exploration to middle and high school students.

1Applications are currently being accepted for the New York ACE Academy being held on June 6 – July 11, 2014. Deadline for applications is June 22, 2014. Application and additional details are available at: http://www.obap.org/project-aerospace/aviation-career-education-ace-academy/. Academies can fill up quickly so we encourage interested students to complete the application as early as possible for consideration. Admission is offered to students ages 14-18 years old that have an interest in learning about aviation. Applicants are competitively ranked based on age, cumulative GPA, and essay.

31Academy participants will learn about aviation history, theory of flight, and other aviation-related subjects.  Students will have the opportunity to go on field trips to aviation facilities including a visit to JetBlue’s terminal and Hangar, visit museums and participate in other hands-on activities designed to give students a total aviation experience. Students will participate in activities that feature STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) components. Also, these academies offer students the opportunity to perform actual flights in a general aviation aircraft. Traditionally, these flights have been the highlight of a student’s experience.
