A church building in Harlem will be demolished to make way for an apartment building with 46 units, DNAinfo reports. Permits were approved last week, according to the Department of Buildings’ website.
The new building will stand 11 stories tall and include a medical office located on the cellar and ground floor level. NY YIMBY first reported on the project last month, when demolition plans were yet to be filed. The first proposed plan was rejected by the DOB due to incomplete drawings, but plans for the demolition of the church have so far been approved.
The property was once home to the Morning Star Pentecostal Chapel, which had been facing several problems in recent years. It was issued a vacate order twice in the last few years – once in 2012 for cracks in the rear wall, and then again in 2014 for deteriorating floor boards and the parapet.
Levi Balkany is listed as the developer on the project and DJLU Architect will design the new building.
An expected date for completion is yet to be announced, but Curbed has reached out to the architect for more details.
