AdvantageCare Physicians (ACPNY), one of New York City’s largest primary and specialty care medical practices— installs the first-ever bias in healthcare education training program.
The healthcare education training program for all its clinical and frontline staff, Unconscious Bias in Medical Offices.
Given ACPNY’s unique presence in low-income neighborhoods and in communities of color in all five boroughs, the medical practice pioneered its ground-breaking program to become better stewards of medical care and services to its more than half a million patients.
The program, which was in development for months, was fast-tracked as the pandemic and issues of systemic racism gripped the nation.
These issues exposed long-standing healthcare disparities for minority communities who are being infected and dying from COVID-19 at alarmingly high rates.
The training is a cultural competency course for clinical care teams that addresses racism and bias in the medical field and how medical professionals’ direct, indirect, and unconscious bias can lead to poor outcomes and even death for patients.
It was also strategically designed to examine, uncover and teach what constitutes bias and how biases affect medical professionals’ behaviors and interactions with colleagues and patients.
This intense course- – open to ACPNY’s 215 primary care physicians, 165 specialist physicians, and 228 nurses— helps increase self-awareness and determines subconsciously held biases and how to correct them.

Since its inception, the program has been widely accepted by staff and will be expanded across all EmblemHealth and its family of companies.
