New York Road Runners Ushers In 50th Anniversary Of Harlem Week At Percy Sutton Harlem 5K

August 6, 2024

To kick off the 50th anniversary of Harlem Week and celebrate the culture, diversity, and history of Harlem, nonprofit New York Road Runners (NYRR).

NYRR will host around 5,000 runners of all ages and abilities at the annual Percy Sutton Harlem 5K.

As NYRR’s premier event in the neighborhood, the Percy Sutton Harlem 5K spotlights the nonprofit’s year-round impact in Harlem, which includes free programming for youth and older adults. Among the programs represented will be more than two dozen participants of NYRR Run for the Future running their first-ever 5K alongside NYPD First Deputy Commissioner Tania Kinsella. The program for New York City high school junior and senior young women uses running as a tool for empowerment and transformation.

In addition to honoring Harlem, the race will commemorate Percy Sutton (1920-2009), a prominent Black political, social, cultural, and business leader who championed the first five-borough New York City Marathon in 1976 and founded Harlem Day, now known as Harlem Week.

New York Road Runners has collaborated with the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) for 15 years to engage and activate the Harlem community around the event.

Additional NYRR free programs represented at the Percy Sutton Harlem 5K include:

NYRR Striders: 100+ members of the free walking, running, and fitness program for older adults

Rising New York Road Runners: 500+ youth ages 2-18 participating in free dashes and races
