New York Cares Hosts Back-To-School Celebration With Free Backpack Distribution

September 3, 2024

New York Cares, the largest volunteer network in the city, is set to host a vibrant back-to-school celebration on Wednesday, September 4th, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM.

The event will take place at P.S. 171 Patrick Henry, located at 19 East 103rd Street in East Harlem. This event will feature the distribution of hundreds of donated backpacks filled with essential school supplies for students and families in need.

Attendees can look forward to a festive atmosphere complete with giveaways, photo opportunities, and special surprises as they collect their new backpacks, which will include items such as scissors, markers, pencils, glue sticks, folders, and pink erasers.

Media representatives will have the opportunity to interview New York Cares Executive Director Sapreet K. Saluja and P.S. 171 Principal Aharon Schultz during the event.

This initiative is part of New York Cares’ fifth annual Stand with Students campaign, which aims to raise $500,000 and distribute 20,000 backpacks filled with vital school supplies for the upcoming academic year. Donations made during this campaign will support numerous year-round projects managed by New York Cares, including academic tutoring, college preparation, and programs focused on fitness, art, and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) to help students and families thrive.
