Navigating New York City: The Travel Advisory Across Harlem To The Hudson

March 8, 2024

New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) has issued a critical travel advisory for March 9th to 10th, urging all New Yorkers.

Especially those residing or conducting business in coastal areas, to remain vigilant and take necessary preparedness measures.

The National Weather Service has sounded the alarm with citywide flood alerts due to the looming threat of potential flooding. In southern Queens, a Coastal Flood Watch is in effect from 6:00 p.m. Saturday to 1:00 p.m. Sunday, aligning with two high tide cycles on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

The heaviest rainfall is anticipated on Saturday evening and Sunday morning, intensifying concerns for coastal areas.

Coastal Flood Statements have been issued for Brooklyn, Manhattan, southern Queens, and Staten Island, projecting minor flooding tomorrow morning, with up to one foot of water inundating vulnerable shorelines.

The implications of coastal flooding are far-reaching, encompassing city thoroughfares, streets, basements, and underpasses.

Residents are advised to seek higher ground during heavy rain or, if in a basement, to relocate to a higher floor to ensure safety.

As coastal flooding can result in perilous travel conditions, New Yorkers are strongly advised to limit unnecessary travel and remain indoors during severe weather.

For essential travel, exercise utmost caution and avoid areas where water covers roadways, as the depth may pose significant risks to safety.
