Tuesday, October 10, 2022, is World Homeless Day, but Zack Hodgson, Director of Emergency Services for The Salvation Army Greater NY Division, says every day is Homeless Day.
This is especially the case from Harlem to Hollis, where a staggering 52,000 people– including 17,000 children are living unhoused.
The number of New Yorkers sleeping in municipal shelters is 15% higher than it was 10 years ago and only shows signs of rising.
As the temperatures drop, homelessness becomes an even harsher reality, with the unhoused unable to warm their bodies, and avoid frostbite, hypothermia, and even death. Yet, according to Hodgson, there are ways to fight this slow-moving crisis.
Hodgson is concerned with the vast need and the committed efforts, including providing mental health support, food, temporary shelter, and health services, that nonprofits and other groups are doing to serve this vulnerable population.
