materials for the artsYeah, Materials for the Arts (MFTA) has invited over 65 Department of Education (DOE) Schools to participate in their Back to School Shopping Day. Schools of all grade levels from all five boroughs will be represented.

MFTA, a Queens based program, part of NYC’s Department of Cultural Affairs, collects surplus materials and redistributes them free of charge to 4,700 NYC public schools and nonprofits with ongoing arts initiatives.

A robust volunteer program offers service opportunities for corporate groups and provides a safe volunteering space for special needs individuals.

The Back to School Shopping Day is part of the MFTA initiative to increase the number of NYC DOE public school members, visits and access to free supplies and materials. This event is meant to help teachers in their preparation for the upcoming fall semester by providing supplies for their classrooms, students, class and school projects, as well as, ideas for potential new lesson plans.

Here are the schools in Harlem and uptown participating (so far):

  • Juan Morel Campos Secondary School
  • New  East River Academy Q
  • PS 373
  • Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School
