A service of praise and thanksgiving for the life of Nelson Mandela held at Riverside Church in Morningside Heights was a chance for New Yorkers to pay tribute to an international icon.
The soul of South Africa, from its songs to its spirit: Praising and celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela brought those in attendance at the Church to their feet.
The ceremony drew a crowd of hundreds, who filled two levels of this historic church.
An emotional David Dinkins was among those who made remarks. The former mayor was instrumental in Mandela’s first visit to New York City.
The church was a fitting location for the tribute. Mandela visited it in 1990 and again during his final trip to the United States in 2005.
An important man was remembered, honored, celebrated, never to be forgotten.
