Macy’s is denying reports that have spread on social media that it is opening a store in Harlem.
“We have looked at opportunities in the neighborhood in the past but there are currently no plans to open a store in Harlem,” a spokesperson said in a statement. The spokesperson said the next store opening in New York will be at the Bay Plaza Shopping Center in the Bronx in 2014.
That contradicts the reports that have been bandied about that Macy’s was planning to come to a location under development on 125th Street. That project has local black-owned businesses fuming because they fear they are being pushed out, according to Fox 5’s Lisa Evers. The project would include a civil rights museum and the headquarters for the Urban League.
Macy’s flagship store is located about 90 blocks south in Herald Square. The retailer also has locations in Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx.
