Kaplan Urges Residents Get Mammograms During Pandemic, Shares Breast Cancer Survivor Resources

February 6, 2021

Amid reports that many people have chosen to postpone preventative cancer screenings and mammograms during the COVID pandemic.

State Senator Anna M. Kaplan (D-Great Neck) is reminding residents of safety measures that are in place to protect patients during screenings, and urging residents in Nassau County to continue to receive their annual, potentially life-saving mammograms.

Senator Anna M. Kaplan said “We all know that when it comes to breast cancer, early detection saves lives, so it’s important that women continue to get routine mammograms even during the pandemic.

Medical offices have taken extraordinary measures to protect patients from COVID-19, so you can feel safe getting this critically important screening done.”

For individuals who have faced job loss and/or lack health insurance, The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program can assist with free and/or low-cost mammography screening resources (in English and Spanish) through its Sisters United In Health Initiative.

Karen Kostroff, M.D., FACS and Chief of Breast Surgery at the Northwell Health System and board member of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, says, “We needed some time to prepare our offices, and put the measures in place so we could care for our patients’ safety. Today our breast imaging offices are clean and safe and open for patients. It is very important for women to return for mammography, and not to skip this year.”

Lastly, the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has numerous virtual breast cancer support groups available to residents in our community.
