In this picture book Jazz Day: The Making of a Famous Photograph by Roxanne Orgill, it is aimed at kids age 8 and up, Orgill recounts the history of jazz through a couple of dozen poems — each accompanied by beautiful and happy drawings by Detroit artist Francis Vallejo. The title comes from when photographer Art Kane gathered more than four dozen musicians — including greats such as Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie — in front of a brownstone in Harlem in 1958.
Getting all these stars together was not an easy task, but Jazz Day: The Making of a Famous Photograph shows how much fun everyone had.
