It would not feel like the holidays without the Harlem School of the Arts annual Home for the Holidays Christmas Show featuring the HSA Dance Ensemble.
Under the direction of Leyland Simmons, artistic and dance director – with choreography by Jude Evans, Renea Rossi, Paris Jones, and additional members of the HSA Dance Faculty. The show will run for two consecutive weekends, beginning on Friday, December 13th at 7:00 PM and closing with a 3:00 PM show on Sunday, December 22nd, 2024.
This joyous production, a celebration of the holidays, depicted through the beauty of dance, music, and storytelling in one glorious and unforgettable performance, is perfect for the entire family. The production takes audiences on a magical journey through the beautiful neighborhood of Harlem, New York, led by HSA Theater students under the direction of Mercedes White with the musical styling of the Dorothy Maynor Singers. This unforgettable extravaganza spotlights HSA’s focus on the richness of its arts education programs and the immersive training that all students receive as members of the organization’s student body.
Among the many talented faculty members lending their talents to the production is the legendary Baba Don Eaton Babatunde, who has long been acknowledged as one of New York City’s master teachers of African Drumming, and the rhythms of the Diaspora in the Americas.
Members of the young dance ensemble performing in the holiday show will take center stage at Radio City Music Hall on December 16th at 10:30 AM, opening for the world-famous Rockettes during their annual Christmas Spectacular.
For the past 3-years, thanks to a partnership developed with the Radio City Rockettes, the HSA dancers have been given the rare opportunity to share their talent, performing on one of the most iconic stages in the world.
This important partnership has provided the young HSA dance troupe with mentorship, precision dance training, make-up tutorials, and much more, including the chance to imagine themselves one day, joining the precision dance group renowned around the world.
HSA is a gift that was presented to the community of Harlem by the renowned concert soprano Dorothy Maynor.
While she was denied access to some of the nation’s most important stages, due to segregation, she wanted to ensure that the children of the Harlem community were given access to the arts and an opportunity to discover their own creativity.
Sixty-years later her legacy continues to enrich the lives of thousands of young people, whose dreams, whether artistic or in pursuit of other interests, have been nurtured at HSA.
