I Am So Harlem Benefit Honors Bethann Hardison In Harlem

SoHarlem will be honoring fashion industry icon, Bethann Hardison at this year’s Annual Benefit: I Am So Harlem.

The event is an inspirational evening that includes SoHarlem’s first fashion show along with music, art, and memorable cuisine.

The benefit will be followed by a weekend-long pop-up featuring SoHarlem’s Design Collective. “SoHarlem’s entrepreneurs have been creating extraordinary work and the three-day Pop-Up of their fashion lines is a wonderful reflection of Harlem’s legendary contribution to fashion,” states Founder and CEO of SoHarlem, Janet Rodriguez.

The events will be taking place in the Manhattanville Factory District at 439 West 127th Street beginning Thursday, September 12 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The three-day Pop Up series will take place on Friday, September 13 from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Saturday, September 14, and Sunday, September 15 from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

The I Am So Harlem Annual Benefit will be honoring advocate, documentarian, model Bethann Hardison and will include a fashion show featuring inspirational designs from the Design Collective, accompanied by live music from South African cellist Thapelo Masita, all set in one of Harlem’s most impressive spaces as our backdrop.

Additionally, guests will have an opportunity to view Don’t Hate the Players, Change the Game, a captivating mini-doc with the legendary Dapper Dan and videography by one of SoHarlem’s Creative Entrepreneurs, Kenny Allen. A Harlem Derby installation by Robert Louis Owens and a major art piece by Milagros Batista will also be part of our celebratory showcased items.

SoHarlem has been an essential force in the transformation of the once underutilized Manhattanville Factory District into a successful business community employing local residents.

Since its founding in 2011, SoHarlem has assisted in launching more than 25 micro businesses from custom-made, couture garments, urban streetwear, fashion accessories, and other businesses. Its Creative Economy Training Institute started in 2017 has trained more than 50 unemployed and underemployed residents.

Designers work in the SoHarlem atelier, so all of their designs are created and produced in Harlem ensuring that the quality of the craftsmanship is first in class. As participants in the SoHarlem incubator program, these designers are Creative Entrepreneurs who have taken the time to develop their design skills and have had the benefit of developing their business and marketing acumen to utilize these platforms to build their business.
