HW Questionnaire: K Black Is Back

Harlem World Magazine caught up with K Black as he talked about working with Shyne (Bad Boy), Lil’ Wayne, TOTAL, Jaheim, Hezekiah Walker’s and Liz Black, having music in the family, starting his own label and his upcoming new CD Marva.Harlem World Magazine: When did you realize that music was your love?

K. Black: Well let me say this, first.i started playing the drums at the early age of 3 years old.

Then started off by playing in my parents church. I started with the drums then later moved to keys, then during high school I learned production, so that was basically where it came from, but it was a gift from God .

HW: Who has inspired you along your musical journey?

KB: There are a lot of people I probably couldn’t even name them all but lets just say I’m still in contact with most of them today lol, I have a lot of people I look up too.

HW: What’s the difference between the new release Marva and the your 2011 debut album Out of Range?

KB: Well the song MARVA is very personal because its named after my mother inlaw who passe away. And it describes who she was as a person ,it will make you love your mother if shes here and if shes not you will reflect on all the good times you’ve had with her. Basically  it  just touches the heart.

HW: Is the new album writer, vocals, and produced by you?

KB: The song Marva is written, vocals and produced by me yes, but my soon to be released album is produced by myself, but a few songs are co written with some of the my Delray  family  writers such as( Shakira and Harmony Jones), Darryl Floyd, Donnie Alexander  and Pamela long from the group Total.

HW: How has gospel music informed your music?

KB: Gospel is the base of where my sound  comes from. I’m a church boy to the day I die lol.

HW: You’ve worked with Shyne (Bad Boy), Lil’ Wayne, Pam Long (Bad Boy recording artists TOTAL), Jaheim. What did you learn from those projects?

KB: I learned how to be a seasoned producer because I was thrown in the fire at such a young age. I thank God for the experience.

HW: Why did you start your own company Del Ray Entertainment?

KB: Lol, just a quick correction its now called Delray music group. Delray was my cousins Shawn middle name and when we were kids he dreamed of owning his on studio and running a company ,and we would talk about it as kids but due to his untimely death at the age of 16 I chose to carry the vision and bring it to life.

HW: What is your connection to Desiree Coleman-Jackson’s 2009 Gospel album, Grammy Award winning, Hezekiah Walker’s and Liz Black’s “Sunday Praise”?

KB: Those are all of my good friends and I have much respect for all of them, let’s see I worked on Desiree Coleman-Jackson  project and it was a blast she was very easy and great to work with Bishop HEZ gave me a shot to do his first radio intro titled afternoon praise yes I was the first lol. Also, Liz Black Sunday Praise still comes on and I love her she such a sweet person.

HW: We read some great things about your Uncle Ron, who worked with pioneers like Grand Master Flash?

KB: Yes, my Uncle Ron is a great guy I used to watch him make music and rap and I wanted to be just like him growing up.

HW: What is your philosophy behind your music?

KB: Just feel the vibe, let it take control of you and your sound will always be amazing I learned that from my good friend Tim Shider from Plainfield, New Jersey

HW: We understand you have a new gospel song, “Nobody” coming out by Marvin Sapp’s on his upcoming album, I’m Still Standing. can you tell us a little about that?

KB:  Yes, the song is already out and it’s a great song has like a 60’s swing to it ,very soulful.

HW: What advice can you give someone who wants to follow in your footsteps?

KB: To always put God first and follow your dreams even when it looks and seems difficult if you keep pushing and knocking at the door its gone open.
