HW Questionnaire: Harlem’s Mikey Rox

November 6, 2011

Mikey Rox

Harlem World: What is your job title?

Mikey Rox: My job title is Principal. Basically a fancy, new millennium term for owner or the guy who runs this ship.

HW: What do you do for a living?

MR: I own a business called Paper Rox Scissors, and I would broadly classify my line of work as advertising and marketing. I write copy for advertising and marketing materials such as brochures, websites, print ads, e-mail campaigns, etc. My business also designs websites, logos and corporate collateral, and we’ve recently started dabbling in publicity for a couple clients, which has been successful so far.

HW: Who has been your greatest inspiration?

MR: John F. Kennedy Jr. He was driven, determined and dedicated to prove himself – and he did.

HW: What are you reading these days?

MR: Entertainment Weekly and the backs of all the products I buy.

HW: What’s your favorite music and why?

MR: My choice is not at all interesting, but pop music is my favorite. When I listen to music, I don’t want to get emotional or involved. All I need is a good, uptempo beat and I’m satisfied.

HW: What is your most treasured possession?

MR: This is tough, because there are a few things that I would be sad to lose. One is my PEZ collection. It’s about 15 years in the making. I have hundreds of dispensers. I also have a bright yellow hand-painted skull that I bought on a trip to Mexico once. I really like that.

HW: What is your favorite quote?

MR: “If you don’t have anything nice to say, come sit by me.” – Clairee Belcher, “Steel Magnolias”

HW: Who would you like to meet and why?

MR: I suppose I’d like to meet God. I have a lot of questions, one of which would be answered as soon as he showed his face, or whatever he has. Secondly, I’d ask him why so many of his followers are ignorant and hateful people. Then I’d ask him if their bigotry is justified. And if he says yes, I have to take my chances going wherever God isn’t.

HW: If you could, what would you give the world as a gift?

MR: Open-mindedness and rational thought.

HW: What is your proudest accomplishment?

MR: So far, I think it’s an article I wrote for CNN.com on anti-gay bullying. More than 50,000 people read the piece, and the feedback I received was incredible. However, I’d like to think my best accomplishments are yet to come.

HW: What’s your favorite place in Harlem?

MR: There’s a French bistro just around the corner from my condo called Yatenga. I spend a lot of time there writing and thinking and chatting. It’s a great place to relax and unwind after a long day, too. And the food is amazing – especially the shrimp dish and the mac-and-cheese.

HW: What are your business links where our readers can stay in touch with you?

MR: They can go to our website: www.PaperRoxScissors.com
