“Having a figure like Mr. Preisser join the HSA family is something I am so proud to share publically. His experience in every aspect of the theatre discipline, both here in New York and globally, will no doubt impact each HSA student that enters his classes,” said Yvette L. Campbell, President and CEO of the Harlem School of the Arts.
As a first theatre program initiative under his direction, Alfred presents the Harlem School of the Arts Summer Theatre Intensive.
“Harlem School of the Arts is a place where art of all kinds thrives and that is the primary reason I was drawn to it. The Summer Theatre Intensive will help us to aggressively introduce the kind of work we plan to do at the school. I am thrilled to be a part of it,” said Alfred Preisser, Theatre Program Director of the Harlem School of the Arts.
The Summer Theatre Intensive imagines a wide ranging schedule of theatre classes and an immersive theatre experience for young actors aged 12 through 17 (middle school through high school). Teen Theatre Intensive students will explore physical preparation, voice and speech, writing and scene study and ensemble work with a team of working professionals, culminating in the rehearsal and presentation of an end-of-session show.
Essentially an ensemble building tool for the creation of The Harlem School of the Arts Theatre Prep Company, the Summer Theatre Intensive is designed to recruit and connect with new talent as well as the existing Prep Company members and begin positioning the Theatre Department for more challenging educational and performance work.
Special guest faculty members include returning HSA Alumni Chis Meyers, recipient of a 2014 Obie Award earlier this month for his performance in the critically acclaimed Off Broadway production of “An Octoroon” at the Soho Rep, and Khalil Kain, best known for his role in the series “Girlfriends” and on film: Juice (1992), For Colored Girls (2010) and Love Jones (1997).
