How To Build Your Own Basketball Court In Your Yard

October 25, 2020

Playing any kind of sport has various benefits for your health and can be a great way to build your social circle.

If you can do this from the comfort of your own home, even better. You can bring friends over or you know there is always something to do with your family that does not involve staring at a screen and it will definitely have you all interact with each other.

Basketball is an easy sport for the majority of people and even young children can play. This sport is also one of the easiest sports to bring to your home as you can make the necessary adjustments that are suitable for you and your space.

In this article, we will advise you on how to build your own basketball court in your yard.

Determine the Size You Can Build

The very first thing you will want to do is consider the space that you have available and how much space you will have to work with. Not everyone has the possibility to build a full-sized NBA basketball court in their back garden, which is 94 ft. x 50 ft. But do not be discouraged if you have a small percentage of that, even if all you get is a free throw lane. Just make sure that the surface is fairly flat to allow for your court to be built.

Mark the Dimensions

You can literally just have one or two basketball hoops in your yard for some throws and call it a day, however, your basketball court will be much more professional if you take the time to mark out the dimensions of the court. You can simply do this with a tape measure or a surveying level and four stakes. Make sure your court has a good amount of room for you to play and also for players to be out of bounds.

Level the Playing Field

If you are working with a surface of dirt, you should consider turning it into a concrete one. Basketball courts are not done in the dirt, and if you are able to make these massive changes in your yard and are serious about the basketball court, then go for it. Firstly, you will want to make sure that the surface is leveled. This means potentially moving dirty from some areas to put in others to make sure it is all smooth and at the same level. Secondly, you can cement the surface, just make sure you do this step when the weather is dry. It may be difficult to get this done properly, especially if you have no prior experience working with cement. Evidently, if you do not do this properly you can cause serious damage to the property, therefore, consider hiring a professional to do this for you.

Purchase The Hoops

Evidently, you cannot have a basketball court without basketball goals. There are many available on the market that you can choose from, allowing you to get the one that suits you and your location the most. You can purchase a basketball goal that you can cement into the ground or go for basketball portable hoops, which may be a better choice if you are in rented accommodation and are not allowed to make permanent changes to your place. Whatever option you choose, just make sure that you do not place the hoop near windows to prevent damage when you are playing.

Paint Lines

There is nothing that will make your own basketball court look professional more than painted lines on the surface. This will make it look professional and allow you to play games and follow the rules as well as any NBA player. You should get yourself a stenciling kit, which can make this job much easier, or do it by hand with some tape and a can of spray paint. Make sure that you paint the out of bounds line, the center of the court, the free-throw line, and the free-throw lane. You do not necessarily have to go for white paint – be creative and design your basketball court to your own liking.

Accessorize

To finish your basketball court, make sure that you add a few additional accessories. You can look into adding rubber flooring and asphalt to the cemented surface we previously mentioned, or containment fences. Then use some paint to paint your own logo or add colors to your court, as we previously discussed. Doing these little bits may seem extra but they will make the difference between being average and having a near-professional basketball court.

Building your own basketball court maybe your childhood dream or you may be doing it as a way to spend more outdoor time with your children or your friends. Achieving this does not have to be difficult – just make sure you follow some of the tips discussed above and, most importantly, have fun!
