Community Works announces the opening of Spirit of Community: Women and Their Art, the newest visual arts component of Community Matters NYC. The exhibition is on display at the Interchurch Center ’s Treasure Gallery through March 28. A public opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 13, 5:00-7:30 p.m.
Experience a stunning collection of work created by four contemporary women artists from across the city. Through sculpture, collage, painting, multi-media textile art, photography and printmaking these artists explore a spectrum of social and human issues.
The artists’ backgrounds are as diverse as the media in which they work and reflect the rich variety of the city’s art makers. Three live in Harlem . Vickie Frémont, who is from Cameroon , uses African beads and textiles to highlight the nobility, strength, and energy of African women. Tomo Mori, born in Japan , has developed a canvas on canvas collage technique inspired by digital images but utilizing traditional mosaic methods (see piece above). Alex Unthank, an African American emerging artist, explores the juxtaposition between the natural and the manmade through photography and printmaking. Janice Patrignani, a Staten island resident of Italian-American heritage, creates sculptures using materials as mundane as the detritus of everyday life and as sublime as Shibori, an ancient Japanese fiber art of dyeing.
This exhibition was developed in honor of Women’s History Month by Community Works NYC in partnership with The Interchurch Center and its curator, Frank DeGregorie, as part of the Community Matters NYC partnership. Barbara Horowitz, Founder and President of Community Works , stated, “How proud we are to partner again with The Interchurch Center and to present the extraordinary work of these four women artists.”
