Patch reports that police have arrested a homeless man who they say abandoned a 1-year-old child inside a Harlem apartment building last week. Antonio Staton, 22, on Thursday left an infant boy in the exterior foyer of an apartment building on the 200 block of West 132 Street, between Adam Clayton Powell Jr. and Frederick Douglass boulevards.
Staton placed a table across the foyer’s opening to prevent the child from leaving the building, police said. He is not related to the child.
Staton then walked to a building next door, threw a bag of diapers in the trash and left the scene, police said. The boy was found around 11 a.m. Thursday, less than 30 minutes after he was abandoned.
The boy was found to be safe and in good health, but was taken to a local hospital for a precautionary evaluation, police said.
ABC reports that the toddler, 20-month-old DJ Maddox, was reunited with his mother Alandria Clark Friday night.
On Sunday, police said Staton had been arrested and faces charges of kidnapping, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child. It wasn’t immediately clear if he has an attorney who can comment on the charges.
