As part of Harlem Week, Food Bank For New York City – the city’s largest hunger relief organization.
Will host its biggest celebration of the year by firing up the grills with delicious foods, providing New Yorkers with a farmers’ market-style distribution full of beautiful greens and healthy choices, music, and more!
While many may think summer is a fun time of year, for the New Yorkers we serve, it can be a time of struggle and stress. Summer vacation means many of our city’s youngest neighbors are no longer getting the free breakfasts and lunches they get at school, adding extra strain to households where finances are already tight.
And as back-to-school approaches, parents also must figure out how to afford the school supplies, backpacks, and clothing their children need to start the school year with the dignity they deserve.
Hosting or having barbecues throughout the summer is a privilege and one that many of the 1.2 million New Yorkers facing food insecurity simply can’t afford. Food Bank’s third annual Harlem barbecue celebration brings the neighborhood together and gives stressed-out caregivers the chance to share a fun moment with their family, allowing them not only to eat delicious food, but to take home fresh produce from our Farmers Market stand, enjoy live music, enroll in SNAP benefits, and connect with new and old friends from the neighborhood.

As they dance on the streets of Harlem and color with their children, they’ll create memories that will last a lifetime, memories that they may not have been able to share otherwise due to financial struggle.
This year’s celebration will honor Chef Max Hardy and Food Bank’s Founder, Kathy Goldman, two very cherished individuals who made many strides for the organization and its community.
