Lawmakers say the NY City Council is expected to pass landmark legislation to create a stand-alone NYC Department Of Veterans Services.
Harlem Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Veterans Committee Chair Eric Ulrich said Wednesday New York City will become the largest municipality in the country to establish an agency solely dedicated to serving military veterans.
The bill essentially elevates the Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs to the department level.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and Veterans Affairs Commissioner Loree Sutton released a statement saying they are proud to support the legislation “creating an agency dedicated to our brave veterans and their families.”
It wasn’t clear when the Council will vote on the bill.
