Harlem’s Ydanis Rodriguez Statement On Trump Administration Decision To End DACA

September 6, 2017

Following the decision by the Trump Administration to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), NYC Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez released the following statement:

“The Trump Administration‘s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program is a heartless move that will devastate the lives of nearly one million Americans. It is a slap in the face to the hundreds of thousands who have contributed to this country with their tax dollars, their labor, their entrepreneurial spirit, their knowledge and so much more. This is a decision predicated on racism, xenophobia and an exclusionary view of nationalism, despite the fact that we are all immigrants. Those who have benefitted from Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals are young people who have never known a country other than America. They are college graduates working to start new businesses, they are American heroes like Alonso Guillen, who gave his life attempting to save others impacted by Hurricane Harvey in Texas, they are our future and are a crucial part of what makes America great.

The Trump Administration has failed once again to uphold core values of this nation. It is now the responsibility of those in Congress to defend those who have been American for nearly their entire lives; those who had no choice in coming here, but who nonetheless have lived their lives as productive members of our society. If ever there was a time to stand up for justice, for morality and for what is plainly the right thing to do, it is now. I implore our federal legislators to show some leadership and protect our Dreamers from unwarranted persecution.”
