In recognition of the ongoing coronavirus epidemic, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine will hold its 22nd Annual Blessing of the Bicycles ceremony online this year.
This year they do it with a special focus on bicycle messengers and delivery people and the essential role they play in supporting New York City on the Cathedral’s Facebook page and website.
The Cathedral’s annual Blessing of the Bicycles celebration typically draws hundreds of participants and their bikes, scooters, skates, unicycles, and every other form of human-powered vehicles to the Cathedral’s Gothic interior.
The service, now a Cathedral tradition, was co-founded with cyclist Glen Goldstein and usually takes place the day before New York City’s Five Borough Bicycle Tour.
This year’s online ceremony, open to all, will be led by The Reverend Patrick Malloy, Sub-Dean of the Cathedral, who will offer a blessing for the safety of all cyclists, particularly the delivery people and messengers whose labor is essential to the functioning of New York City.
