If you’re hoping to get into the holiday spirit a little early this season, let Harlem resident and NY Knick Carmelo Anthony be your guide.
According to CBS Sports, Melo found time in his busy NBA schedule to pay a visit to some families in need. In partnership with his Carmelo Anthony Foundation, the Knicks forward donated 800 boxes of food to Bronx homes. Carmelo tells ESPN he felt compelled to help because he relates to each family and their stories.
He explains,
“I’ve been there. I have family in these boroughs and I know what it’s like. I know this seems minute, but this is big.”
Last week, Harlem man Carmelo also visited young inmates at New York’s Rikers Island, where he spoke with the teens to hear their personal stories and help them understand that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
When asked why he chose to visit the jail, Anthony explains,
Rikers is a place that we’ve all heard of. I was amazed to find out that it’s the largest penal colony in the world. Recently, we’ve heard and read a lot about abuse and violence there. I wanted to see the situation there for myself, as a New Yorker.
