Harlem Rep. Espaillat Applauds Supreme Court Decision Affirming Federal Anti-Discriminatory Laws To Protect LGBTQ Employees

Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat issued the following statement on the 6-3 ruling by the United States Supreme Court that discrimination based on sexual orientation and transgender status violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.:

“LGBTQ friends, family, neighbors, and allies in New York’s 13th congressional district and across the country have been strident advocates for equal protection under the law, and today’s 6-3 ruling by the Supreme Court is one step towards recognizing true and lasting equality,” said Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13). “But this fight – unified behind the principle that all people deserve the dignity and respect of others – does not end with today’s decision.

“House Democrats passed H.R. 5, the Equality Act to reaffirm that freedom from discrimination is a fundamental civil right that belongs to every American, and that no New Yorker or any American should ever lose their job, their home or live in fear simply because of who they are or whom they love. Our fight continues and we cannot remain idle and oblivious to the reality around us. I vow to continue to stand with my House colleagues, Democrats and Republicans alike, in support of the Equality Act to codify protections for LGBTQ people beyond the workplace and in every part of their lives and call on Senate Leader Mitch McConnell to allow the Equality Act to come to the floor of the U.S. Senate for proper debate and a vote.

“We must continue our efforts daily to strengthen anti-discrimination protections for the LGBTQ community and remain committed in always taking a position to stand strong to combat hate, bigotry and discrimination in all aspects of our lives to ensure equality and freedom for all.”

First elected to Congress in 2016, Rep.
